Anna Karenina -- Part I, Chapter XIII

Levin proposes...

Short chapter, chock full of awkward.  Levin shows up early to the evening part at the Shcherbatskaya estate.  He proposes to Kitty, and she turns him down.  Her affection for the still unseen Vronksy trumps the weird brotherly affection to Levin.  Fair enough. Hope this decision doesn't blow up in her face!

That's about it for this chapter, plot-wise.  It ends with Levin turning to exit the party...

NOTES:

--Pretty awesome that the footman announces everyone who enters the residency.  This is a novel mostly concerned with the problems of the 1%.

--Oprah's book-club read Anna Karenina in 2004.  The introduction...

A sexy and engrossing read, this book tells the tale of one of the most enthralling love affairs in the history of literature—but you'll have to decide for yourself which couple is involved! Use our discussion questions, quizzes, character journeys and plot points to uncover the meaning of family and love in 19th-century Russia.
...helps me understand a bit why Franzen didn't want The Corrections to fall into Oprah's people's hands.  Imagine how they would try to sexify that book.  Gross.

That said, I may check in with the Oprah's book club to see how that audience perceived the novel.  Sexy and engrossing?  I'll agree with the latter, not so much on the former.  It's early though.  I've also heard good things about Nabakov's lectures on Tolstoy, but I'm thinking I'll have to save that for when we're closer to the end of the book.

--AK chapters will automatically posted three times a day: 8AM, 12PM, and 3PM.  I can only check the blog during lunch, but feel free to comment.

--I think adding photos for each chapter is a waste of time.  I'll add pics only when I feel utterly compelled.
